Artesa Vineyard & Winery (ahr TESS uh) means "craftsman" in Catalan, the language of Barcelona. The owner, Codorníu, is one of the world's largest and oldest wineries. Artesa handcrafts small lots of ultra-premium still wines with several distinct bottlings. Their primary vineyards are in the coolest portion of the Napa Valley, on a 352-acre Carneros estate ideal for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In the past few years, Artesa has purchased over 400 acres in the Alexander Valley to plant Bordeaux varieties, and a 300-acre Sonoma Coast estate to grow Burgundian grapes. The Visitor Center at Artesa is accessible by a sweeping staircase bordered by cascading waterfalls, reflecting pools and sculpture. At the top, visitors are met with panoramic views of the Napa Valley, Carneros and the San Francisco Bay juxtaposed against a modernist interior, full of rich woods, expanses of glass and dozens of smooth columns. The Visitor Center’s walls and vast spaces are filled with works by their celebrated Artist in Residence since 1997, Gordon Huether. Artesa’s Winemaker is Mark Beringer, a fifth generation winemaker from Napa Valley. In addition to the standard flights available daily in the tasting room, Artesa offers special tasting experiences such as the Vino con Queso Wine & Cheese Pairing, Chocolate Indulgence Chocolate Truffle & Wine pairing and the Food & Wine Pairing that explores wine pairing with 9 different small bites.
